realistic planning
when I got up this morning at the cottage I had a thought about planning...

I often experience resistance or discomfort when I raise the risks of societal collapse with family, friends and colleagues.
This is normal. It’s quite unbearable and unworldly.
I do this because I think it’s useful to remind ourselves of our collective predicament - painful is it - and to align our planning accordingly.
It’s hard to do. How does one plan for a semi-dystopian future?
I’ve noticed that most of my friends and colleagues are well aware of the issues (no need of reminding) but many of us live in either protective bubbles or have given up hope and are ‘riding it out’ in the status quo.
I do both.
So where is the space between bubbling and doomism?
And what’s the timeline?
Here’s a good answer to that one…
What to do?
My suggestion is to normalise including the climate emergency and the risk of societal collapse in every day planning and see how this affects the decisions we make.
For example, when writing a 5 year plan for your organization or family keep in mind what’s on the horizon, such as in this Disruptions report.
And to help us all along, here’s a tool I found in the July 4, 2024 edition of the fabulous Gen Dread Substack newsletter that might help : Choose Your Own Adventure: Climate Action Quiz by Professor Kimberly Nicholas which is intended to ‘help you bust through those feelings of paralysis and overwhelm and start pushing toward real systemic change’.
I tried it and found it useful. Most references are US based but are relevant to all.

Thank you. Very useful advice and perspective. I’ve started including collapse acceptance into almost all of my decisions for the near, mid, and far future. And I include examples in conversations with close friends and family. I live in Southern California where we see evidence of climate change and environmental impact on just about everything. The pavement alone is a huge problem.
